2019 - Autopsy of a product - Global Sustainable Design Workshop

Students in 1st Year of Bachelor's Degree in Design worked on the "Autopsy of a product" workshop, from May 13 to 17, 2019, in order to gain a better grasp on sustainable design.

The workshop was organised by Yves Daubert and Ignacio Mottola, head teachers of the Bachelor's Degree in Global Sustainable Design. All week long, students were supported by Brigitte Khan, a consultant in eco-design, Tom Violleau, a fab manager and designer at Pointcarré, Marie Daubert, a freelance graphic designer, Marie Doranges Daupin, a graphic designer working in a media agency and Michaël Araujo, a designer and fab manager at Volumes.

On the first morning of the workshop, students attended a lecture on sustainable design presented by Brigitte Khan. Then, they were divided in groups and they were asked to pick an object, for example an out-of-service small appliance or electronic device. After that, students had to carry out the object's autopsy to better understand its complexity and how it was made (plastics, metals, batteries, etc).

The workshop's final objective was for students to give a physical presentation of the disassembled objects and their components (on a board or an installation, etc). They had to define a communications strategy and indicate whether the materials they had extracted from the object were recyclable and if so, how and through which channels.

Students then defended their project in front of a jury on Friday afternoon 17th May.
