Artistic awakening workshop - The animal in movement

As every year, our first year students in Bachelor’s Degree in Design experienced their first Workshop, this autumn, around the theme of artistic awakening.

This year, due to the health crisis, we divided this traditional workshop into two groups. One group of students carried out the Workshop from home in a Visio conference, and the second group in a face-to-face workshop at the school, respecting the sanitary measures.

The theme of the first workshop, held at a distance, was « The animal in movement ».

The first pictorial representations made by man were the movement of animals in prehistoric times. These representations are still relevant today. Our students took up the challenge of creating a board on the animal or family of animals of their choice.
The students had to collect referenced images, laid out in the form of a digital file before the artistic awakening.

The exercise took place at a distance, in three main stages with a photo follow-up to enable their teachers, artists-plasticians, to guide them.

The first step was the reconstruction of the anatomical structure of the chosen animal in the form of a sketch made on a first board.

Then, with the help of photographic documents collected by them, they drew other quick sketches which were to highlight the line, the gesture and the movement of the animal. The technique chosen by the student (grease pencil, coloured pencils, charcoal or Indian ink) had to remain the same throughout this exercise.

For the last board, a free interpretation of the moving animal with reference to the artistic work of their choice was requested. It had to be creative and could echo current issues concerning the animal problem.

Through the realisation of their boards, the students were able to communicate what they understood and learned about the subject and to be creative in their technical choices.

A very beautiful work which allows them to envisage the best for their future artistic career.
